Hydrazine hydrate , also known as hydrated hydrazine, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula N2H4·H2O. It is a colorless, transparent, fuming liquid with a light ammonia smell. It smokes in humid air and is highly alkaline and hygroscopic. Under normal pressure, hydrazine can form an azeotrope with water (the hydrazine content in the azeotrope is about 69%). Liquid hydrazine hydrate exists in the form of a dimer, is miscible with water and ethanol, and is insoluble in ether and chloroform; it can corrode glass, rubber, leather, cork, etc., and decomposes into N2, NH3 and H2 at high temperatures; hydrazine hydrate has extremely strong reducing properties and reacts violently with halogen elements, HNO3, KMnO4, etc. It can absorb CO2 in the air and produce smoke. Hydrazine hydrate and its derivatives are widely used in many industrial applications, as reducing agents, antioxidants, in medicine, foaming agents, etc.
