What is the reason for the lack of containers?
Previously, container shipping companies cancelled trans-Pacific trade voyages, and imports from Asia to Europe in July and August also surged due to the alleviation of the blockade. These factors made it difficult for shipping companies to ship containers back to Asia, resulting in container availability at Asian ports. A sharp decline, while some US and European ports are facing increased stay time and port congestion.
It is understood that shippers usually use 40-foot containers to transport lighter goods and 20-foot containers to transport heavier goods. The 40-foot container is currently the most scarce in the market. The utilization rate of this type of container is close to 100%.
Container shortage will continue until 2021
According to the container equipment leasing company Textainer, it is difficult to restore balance between the supply and demand of containers before mid-February next year, and the shortage of containers will continue until after the Spring Festival in 2021.
The shipper will have to be patient and may have to pay at least five or six months of additional costs for the sea transportation of the goods. The rebound in the container market has brought ocean freight charges to record levels, and this situation seems to continue.
